Understanding Insurance Supplements for Your Roof Claim

As a homeowner, you will most likely have to file an insurance claim for roof damage at one point or another, especially if you live in Colorado Springs where storms are a certainty at some point. Even after going through the whole insurance claim process, you may end up receiving inadequate compensation.

This can happen for many different reasons, such as a poor estimate by an adjuster to flaws in the insurance company’s software, but you should know there is something you or your roofing contractor can do about it.

Upon realizing the initial claim doesn't cover the correct scope of work, you can file a supplement request to cover the overlooked repairs.

What is a ‘Supplement’?

A supplement is simply an itemization of the scope of work and an estimate of the damage repairs necessary, not included in the initial claim. Most homeowners' insurance policies provide supplemental coverage, but not all of them, unfortunately. So, you need to check this out on your policy document or contact your insurance company to find out if you have it.

A seasoned roofing contractor can provide an accurate estimate of the required repairs to help you get the proper funds in your insurance claim. When sending the supplement request to the insurance company, the contractor will provide supporting evidence of why those items need to be included in the claim.

These may consist of the manufacturers' installation requirements, photographs, excerpts from the international residential building code, documentation from the local jurisdiction, etc.

Why Should You Care?

Because of Colorado's extreme weather conditions, insurance companies are always stretched with property damage claims. Sometimes, the compensation doesn't come as soon as the policyholder may want or in the amount needed.

If you want to replace your roof with the same quality of materials without incurring extra costs, then supplement requests will almost always be necessary and will help you achieve this. It’s definitely worth the extra work involved in additional filing with your insurance company, most of which your contractor will handle for you.
